New York Yankees: Six Hitters to Target in MLB Free Agency
By Nick Ziegler
Mark Trumbo
If the Yankees are truly interested in a right-handed power hitter this offseason, they should certainly consider Mark Trumbo. Last season, Trumbo led the majors in home runs with 47, as he was four ahead of Nelson Cruz. The Yankees saw Trumbo frequently in 2016, as he was a force in the middle of the lineup for the Baltimore Orioles.
Last season, Trumbo totaled a .256 batting average, 47 home runs, a 108 RBIs. In the hitter-friendly Camden Yards, Trumbo had the best season of his career, and will likely now be looking to cash in on that.
At just 30-years-old, Trumbo will likely be looking for a multi-year deal. Unlike some of the other options for the Yankees, Trumbo’s age shouldn’t be a big factor in their decision making. One thing that might worry teams is Trumbo’s consistency. After a good start to his career with the Los Angeles Angels, Trumbo didn’t play as well for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Last season, Trumbo played 95 games in right field for the Orioles, but he would be best-suited as a designated hitter. With Aaron Judge still being a raw prospect, having a player like Trumbo who can play right field would be good insurance in addition to the power he would provide.
