New York Giants Midseason Grades By Position
Running Backs: D
The Giants running attack has been abysmal. Calling it an attack is an overstatement as they just get nothing going on the ground. Part of the problem is the offensive line not being able to open holes, part because the Giants don’t have much talent at the position.
The Giants were deep at running back with Rashad Jennings, Orleans Darkwa, Shane Vereen, Bobby Rainey, and Paul Perkins coming into the season. Vereen is out for the season and Jennings has missed time, but when he is on the field he has been ineffective.
The Giants barely even attempt to get the running game going as they have no semblance of one. Their gameplan on the ground is to sit in shotgun and hope to sneak a halfback draw past the defense. It rarely works and is why the Giants have only 546 rushing yards this season, averaging an embarrassing 3.2 yards per carry.
The Giants just do not have the personnel to get it done on the ground. They do not have a fullback on the roster as the loss of Will Johnson left them without one. They decided to take a committee approach, but that plan has proved fruitless. Masquerading tight ends as a fullback has not come close to replacing Johnson and is a reason they have struggled so mightily.
Getting the running game going would be nice to see and take pressure off Manning. But don’t hold your breath on something getting done or else you more than likely will suffocate.
