Olivier Vernon

People look at Vernon’s stats and immediately believe he is coming up short on his massive contract. The Giants signed Vernon to a massive five-year, $85 million deal with $52.5 million guaranteed. It was the biggest deal in the history of the NFL for a defensive end.

With that comes heightened expectations. People will say he is not living up to his contract as he has only one sack and 23 tackles on the season. Four of those tackles are for a loss and he has one forced fumble, but people want to see more.

But stats don’t tell the whole story. Just ask head coach Ben McAdoo, who said stats are for losers earlier this week. Vernon has an impact on the game despite what the box score may say. He sets the edge well in run defense, ranking in the top-10 of Pro Football Focus among defensive ends against the run. He also gets pressures on the quarterback, which helps him rank as the 19th overall defensive end in the NFL.

With the Eagles missing some people on the offensive line, this could be the week Vernon gets some stats people will recognize. The Giants will have to try and make Wentz uncomfortable in the pocket and Vernon will be a driving force in making that happen.
