Toronto Maple Leafs vs New York Islanders Recap, Highlights, Final Score, More

The New York Islanders sent the fans home happy from Barlcays Center with a victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The New York Islanders had a strong evening Sunday, defeating the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Islanders, who lost to the Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins earlier in the week.

With the victory, the Islanders record moves to 4-5-0 on the season with eight points. The Maple Leafs fell to 2-4-3 with seven points.

Tonight was a homecoming for former Islanders’ forwardMatt Martin. Martin left this offseason as a free agent, signing a four-year, $10 million deal with the Maple Leafs. The Islanders honored him with a video tribute in the first period during a stoppage in play. Martin was a fan favorite when with the Islanders, playing the first 438 games of his career in blue and orange.

It was a rough welcome otherwise for their former teammate. The Islanders scored just over a minute into the game, asTravis Hamonicscored his second goal of the season. The Islanders would never relinquish that lead, as they would just add as the game went on.

Casey Cizikaswould score later in the first period to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead. Cizikas has been showing improvement this season and it finally paid off on the stat sheet with his first goal of the season.

The second period was scoreless for both teams before things got going in the third period. The Maple Leafs cut the Islander lead in half 50 seconds into the third period;Jake Gardinerscored a power play goal.

That would be as close as the Maple Leafs got, as the Islanders closed out the game by scoring three consecutive goals.

The Islanders were able to hold rookie phenomAuston Matthewswithout a point as well. It was the third consecutive game without a point for Matthews after registering 10 points in his first six games.

GThomas Greiss, Islanders — The starting job could soon be Greiss’ with trade rumors swirling aroundJaroslav Halak. Greiss had a good night against the Maple Leafs, saving 33-of-34 shots, a 97.1 save percentage.

DNick Leddy, Islanders — Leddy stuffed the stat sheet against the Maple Leafs. He had two assists in the game with three blocked shots, one hit, and two shots on goal. He finished the game +2 as well.

CBrock Nelson, Islanders — Nelson had two points against the Maple Leafs, registering an assist and goal, his sixth and third of the season respectively. He also blocked a shot and finished +2 on the evening.

Both the Maple Leafs and Islanders will be back on the ice Tuesday night. The Maple Leafs will take on the Edmonton Oilers at home, while the Islanders continue their homestand with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
