New York Knicks: 6 Predictions for the 2016-17 Season
Derrick Rose Averages 18 Points, 6 Assists
Sure, averaging 18 points and six assists won’t bring him to MVP form, but Rose isn’t the focal point of this offense. Unlike his seven seasons in Chicago, the Knicks have a clear-cut No. 1 option before him and a second-tier dynamic playmaker in the frontcourt.
The former league MVP doesn’t carry the pressures that compare to his past as a scorer. Hornacek wants a point guard who can push the pace to lead fast-break points, keep the offense flowing in half-court situations out of the triangle and contest shots on the defensive end.
Rose won’t even carry the bulk of the pressure to maintain ball movement. As mentioned, Anthony will still control the flow at times. Noah has shown above-average ability to find shooters and opportunistic streakers toward the hoop in years past. In three of the last four seasons, the former Bulls center averaged four or more assists per game.
Due to his time off in the preseason and new scenery, give Rose time to adjust. When he does, his 18 points and six assists will suffice at the position. More importantly, his ability to speed up the pace should generate more points for others. In a contract year, expect Rose to put together of his best seasons in recent memory.
