New York Giants: Week 7 Storylines vs. Los Angeles Rams
Can the Giants Jumpstart the Ground Attack?
Speaking of Gurley, the Giants must ignite their rushing offense for balance. Last week, running back Rashad Jennings turned in a lackluster performance as a ball-carrier. After missing three games with a thumb injury, he accumulated 15 yards on nine carries against the Baltimore Ravens’ No. 1 run defense.
As an average ball-carrier, it’s tough to expect Jennings to mow through a physical Ravens’ front. However, he’ll have a chance to make his presence felt in London against the Rams’ No. 23 run defense. Los Angeles has also allowed 100-plus yards on the ground twice over the past three weeks.
Despite analysts giving much credit to the Rams for their defense, the team boasts a middle-of-the-road unit. The Giants should mix in some passes in the flat and dump off to running back Bobby Rainey on short-yardage plays. The versatility keeps the Rams defense honest and forces defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to think or gamble on a few play calls.
Jennings probably won’t reach 100 yards, but it’s important for the Giants to move the ball at least four yards per carry on the ground. More respect to the ground attack allows Beckham and rookie wideout Sterling Shepard to break free on slant routes.
