New York Giants: Week 7 Storylines vs. Los Angeles Rams
Is Help on the Way for Secondary?
We’ll start with good news. According to New York Daily News reporter Seth Walder, cornerback Eli Apple expects to play on Sunday:
Despite rookie Andrew Adams playing adequately at free safety, the Giants secondary needs more healthy bodies in pass defense. Fortunately, the rookie cornerback seems poised to return after dealing with a groin injury.
Thus far, the No. 10 overall pick has played well in the slot and on the perimeter often switching with cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. The Rams boast one of the least explosive passing offenses in the league at No. 28 in yards gained. With or without Apple, the Giants should fare well against Rams quarterback Case Keenum.
Apple’s ability to tackle in the box and provide run support adds a beneficial asset to the defense. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will place immense focus on stuffing running back Todd Gurley. The Rams star ball-carrier averages 2.9 yards per carry and doesn’t have a 100-yard game on his 2016 resume.
Over the past three weeks, opposing rushing offenses have poked holes in the Giants’ run defense. The group has allowed 98 or more yards in that span. It’s important to bottle up Gurley and prevent the Rams from riding his hot hand to a victory.
