New York Islanders vs New York Rangers: Five Players to Watch
By Nick Ziegler
Jimmy Vesey
One of the biggest prizes in free agency this season was college star Jimmy Vesey. In the second wave of free agency, Vesey was the headliner, and he had plenty of teams that were interested in him. After being the best college player in the country, Vesey will be playing for the Rangers in his rookie season. The Islanders were also one of the teams that were interested in signing Vesey, and Tavares even went to meet with him. Now, the Islanders will be introducing him to the rivalry.
Vesey is projected to be joining Derek Stepan and Mats Zuccarello on what looks like a talented line on paper. Being placed with some veterans should help Vesey’s transition into the NHL. Vesey has been one of the most hyped rookies this season, and that will come with a lot of pressure.
Rangers fans are very knowledgeable of the game, and they will hold Vesey accountable. Even though he is a rookie, it will be important for Vesey to get off to a good start in New York. The media can tear a player apart in the Big Apple, and that is the last thing the Rangers want for Vesey.
Due to them being limited in cap space, young players like Vesey are going to be crucial for the Rangers’ organization moving forward. They have placed him on a good line to succeed, and we will see how he does in his debut.
