New York Giants: Five Takeaways from Loss to Minnesota Vikings
Paul Perkins Shows Strengths and Weaknesses
Perkins flashed some good traits but also lacked in one specific area. His 67-yard reception helped keep the Giants alive at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Furthermore, he looked natural carrying the football on two carries and after two receptions.
However, Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr blew up the rookie running back in protection. Head coach Mike Zimmer continued to dial up the blitz when Perkins attempted to protect Manning in the backfield.
On one particular snap, Manning walked over and literally pointed out where Perkins needed to provide a block like a tour guide in a foreign land.
Of course, we shouldn’t expect perfection in Perkins’ first game. He can provide instant offense as a ball-carrier or receiver, but the rookie must refine his blocking skills to develop into a future starter or handle extra snaps during the season.
If Jennings misses more time, expect Perkins to see a few more looks as a check-down receiver or change-of-pace ball-carrier.
