– More Bilal Powell

One of the big surprises in the first few weeks of the season has been the limited use of running back Bilal Powell. In 2015, Powell emerged as a good contributor to the offense. Many believed that his absence in the final week of the season against the Buffalo Bills helped result in the loss.

The offseason signing of Matt Forte was certainly a good move to replace Chris Ivory, but nobody could have seen the heavy workload that he has carried this season. Forte is 30-years-old and has dealt with some injuries throughout his career. Using him as frequently as the Jets have in the first three weeks of the season isn’t a good idea for if the Jets want him healthy throughout the season.

Powell is certainly capable of helping give Forte some rest, and the Jets appear to be willing to use him more now. After totaling 18 carries and receptions combined in the first three weeks, Powell totaled four carries and six receptions in the loss. This was the second straight week that Powell has totaled 10 touches, as the Jets are doing a better job getting him involved in the offense.

So far, Powell has been effective in his limited opportunities. Getting him more touches in the games to come isn’t a bad idea for the Jets.
