New York Mets: 5 Memorable Moments in Franchise History
Darryl Strawberry A Mammoth Home Run
Drafted out of his Compton high school in Los Angeles, Darryl Strawberry would recall later in his life that he never really left “the hood” behind him. During his glory years in the mid-eighties with the Mets, this would come back to haunt him as he, along with a slew of other teammates indulged in cocaine, amphetamines and alcohol.
“Doc and Darryl”, two kids with all the talent in the world took New York City by storm for what seems now like only a fleeting moment in time. Dwight Gooden’s strikeouts and Darryl Strawberry with his majestic and towering home runs sent to all parts of the outfield, we all thought it would never end.
But it did.
With 355 career home runs that many felt should have been 755, Strawberry, along with his pal Gooden were swept away under reoccurring battles with their demons.
Oh, what a joy it was to watch Strawberry with that bat held zeroing in on a pitch, kicking that right leg high, and then uncoiling with that sweet wonderful swing. What a joy it was.
And for a few sweet moments, Strawberry gave us all a thrill to remember him by.
Here’s Tim McCarver with the call.
