Wilmer Flores Gets Emotional

This one, of course, is very recent. It deserves a special place in Mets’ history only because it shows the human side of the game of baseball.

Often, we tend to think about the men who play a boy’s game as robots. Wind them up and they’ll go out and perform day after day, night after night. Manager Terry Collins would remind us following the game, “These guys are only human and they have feelings just like the rest of us.”

One thing is for sure. Mets fans took this kid into their hearts and adopted him as only New York City can as one of their favorites. This is true even today as Wilmer Flores continues to pound the ball and make contributions to the Mets’ playoffs drive.

As it happened, Flores started hearing fans in stands talking about a trade that was underway. These days, no one attends a game without their umbilical cord, a cellphone, attached to them. Hearing his name mentioned from the dugout and on-deck circle, he wondered how could this be? No one from the Mets’ organization was saying anything, and his manager was standing ten feet away from him.

Proceeding to the batter’s box, things get even crazier as you’ll see in the above video.

As thing played out, Flores would find out only later that the deal had fallen through and he was still a New York Met.
