Slot Cornerback

The Giants surprised some people when they selected Eli Apple with the 10th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. The Giants had other more glaring needs on the team, especially since they had already signed Janoris Jenkins to play opposite of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. But, Apple has No.1 corner potential and is someone the Giants liked a lot.

But, the selection makes a quagmire for this season. While Jenkins and Apple are the future for the Giants on the outside for cornerback, this season someone has to man the slot. None of the trio has much success, let alone experience, playing in the slot so it is something to watch as the summer unfolds.

Jenkins has played almost exclusively on the outside in his NFL career, while Apple did the same at Ohio State. Rodgers-Cromartie was asked to play the slot with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier in his career, and the results were disastrous. But, he looks like the one that may first be receiving a chance in the slot.

Rodgers-Cromartie has taken snaps in the slot, getting the first looks there in training camp. If his previous performance there is any indication, it is an experiment that will end quickly. But, the Giants need to try something if they want to get him, Jenkins and Apple on the field together.

One of the three will have to try and learn to play on the inside, as the Giants will undoubtedly feel pressure to get their first round pick onto the field during his rookie season. This will be a development to keep an eye on because the Giants should be excellent on the boundaries, but opposing teams could look to expose them up the middle where they question marks everywhere beyond the defensive line.
