Tight End

This is arguably the best training camp battle to keep an eye on. Larry Donnell came into 2015 with some solid expectations after a 2014 coming out party when he caught 63 passes for 623 yards and six touchdowns.

But, injuries derailed Donnell and the tight end position in general last season. Donnell suffered a season-ending neck injury, while veteran Daniel Fells suffered a staph infection that looks to have ended his playing career.

With Jerome Cunningham also suffering injuries, the tight end spot became wide open. Replacing the void was rookie Will Tye. Tye was a local product from Stonybrook University that began his college career at Florida State. He made the most of the opportunity presented to him, catching 42 passes for 464 yards and three touchdowns.

Those are impressive numbers for a player who wasn’t even on the roster to start the season, meaning he and Eli Manning had very little practice time with each other. Because of how well he performed, he is now squarely in the running for the starting tight end spot.

Tye and Donnell should battle it out for the starting spot, as both have shown flashes of being difference makers receiving the ball. What to watch them for is who can show that they are a capable blocker. If one of these two can show improvement in that area, allowing the Giants to keep them on the field regardless of the situation, it would give them an upper hand for the starting gig.
