Recent New York Mets news involves their starting rotation, as manager Terry Collins as elected to not skip Logan Verrett’s start, giving everyone else an extra day of rest.

New York Mets news has been coming in steadily in the past couple of days, as manager Terry Collins has his hands full. The Mets recalled Michael Conforto from Triple-A Las Vegas earlier in the week, causing a potential logjam in an already crowded outfield. Collins will have a daily decision with his outfield alignment as he has four players for four spots if Yoenis Cespedes wants to stay in left field.

While that will be a decision that he has to make every day, Collins has already made a decision about his pitching staff for the next couple of days. With the Mets having an off day on Thursday, Collins could have changed up his rotation and kept his starters on regular rest by skipping fifth starter, Logan Verrett, in Friday.

That will not be the course of action for Collins, as Verrett will make his scheduled start Friday against the Miami Marlins, and be followed by Steven Matz on Saturday and Jacob deGrom on Sunday according to ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin, as Bartolo Colon is set to toe the rubber in this afternoon’s series finale with the Chicago Cubs are Wrigley Field.

Noah Syndergaard will then take the mound on Monday in the first game of the series against the St. Louis Cardinals. While Collins could have lined up his three best starters in an important series against the Marlins over the weekend, it makes sense to leave everyone on schedule and not skip Verrett.

By allowing Verrett to pitch Friday, the Mets can get their other starters an extra day of rest. Passing up extra days of rest would make little sense at this point in time, especially when Verrett has been holding his own in replacing the injured Matt Harvey in the starting rotation.

Verrett threw six innings against the Philadelphia Phillies last weekend, allowing only two runs. He has not pitched poorly to the point where Collins would want to take him out of the rotation, so it makes sense that he will get his turn on Friday.

He must step up this time though, as he is scheduled to go up against Adam Conley. If he does not get the Mets a victory in that game, they could be staring down a series loss to a team they need to beat, as Marlins ace Jose Fernandez will be taking the mound Saturday.

Going into that game with a loss in the series opener is not an ideal situation for the Mets, and they can avoid it with Verrett stepping up Friday night. If Verrett is unable to defeat the Marlins Friday, which would make the team 0-3 in his starters replacing Harvey, the Mets could begin looking elsewhere for starting pitching help.
