– Least Valuable Player

It is sad to say that the captain of the Mets is the Least Valuable Player on the team, but that is the unfortunate truth about David Wright. After being diagnosed with spinal stenosis last season, Wright did his best to return to the team last season for their playoff run, but it was obvious that he wasn’t the same player.

Coming into this season, the Mets did a poor job having an adequate backup for Wright, as the team shouldn’t have believed that he would be able to stay healthy. After having neck surgery, Wright’s season is all but over, and his future is very uncertain.

This season, Wright totaled a .226 batting average, seven home runs, and 14 RBIs. Wright was striking out at a very high clip as well, as he totaled 55 strikeouts in 137 at-bats. With Wright out, the Mets have brought in former shortstop Jose Reyes to hopefully replace his friend. The arrival of Reyes will hopefully give the Mets a true leadoff hitter, which is something the team has lacked.

It is sad to see the demise of Wright, but hopefully the injuries the past few seasons won’t be his lasting legacy.
