After being diagnosed with spinal stenosis last season, it was hard to expect much from David Wright this season. As the captain of the Mets, Wright gutted it out last season to try and contribute to their quest for a World Series, but he broke down rather quickly in 2016.

It looks like Wright’s season will be done after having neck surgery this season, as he will likely only play in 37 games for the Mets in 2016. While him being limited was to be expected, playing in only 37 games is not something that the Mets could have seen coming.

This season, Wright totaled a .226 batting average, seven home runs, and 14 RBIs. The power numbers for Wright might have been a bit higher than many would have believed with the bad back, but he struck out a lot and failed to play well even when healthy

The Mets didn’t do a very good job in the offseason of having a suitable backup for Wright, but both Wilmer Flores and Jose Reyes are hitting the ball well heading into the All-Star break. Both of them will have to continue to play well for the Mets in July if they want to prove to Sandy Alderson that he doesn’t need to make a deal for a third baseman.
