New York Mets: 6 Most Disappointing Players of First Half
By Nick Ziegler
– Matt Harvey
After winning the Comeback Player of the Year award last season, Matt Harvey was never able to get going in 2016. Last season, there was a huge debate about innings for Harvey, as when the Mets knew they were going to be playing important games late in the season, Harvey was also nearing innings limits. Harvey decided to pitch past his innings limit and that could be something that haunts him for the rest of his career.
Coming back from Tommy John surgery is not an easy thing to do with the lengthy recovery process, and Harvey ended up throwing a career-high in innings in his first season back. This season, Harvey looked off after the great 2015 campaign, and he has recently been diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome.
Harvey has elected to undergo surgery, and will be out for the rest of the season. The Mets used to have a surplus of starting pitching, but they have all quickly run into some health issues. Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz both have bone spurs in their elbows, which will be something to monitor for the rest of the season.
The Mets did expect to have Zack Wheeler back from his Tommy John surgery this summer, but he had a few setbacks and doesn’t appear to be close to returning. With Harvey out and Wheeler’s return unknown, the Mets might do the unthinkable and look to add a starting pitcher at the deadline.
It is a huge disappointment to see Harvey go down with yet another arm issue, as his bright career might be derailed by his arm issues.
