New York Mets: 6 Most Disappointing Players of First Half
By Nick Ziegler
– Alejandro De Aza
It has been a disastrous first half of the season for Alejandro De Aza in his first season in New York. The Mets made the decision to sign De Aza this offseason to be their fourth outfielder when it appeared that they weren’t going to be able to get a deal done to re-sign Yoenis Cespedes.
With a lifetime .263 batting average, De Aza has been a proven major league ball player, but he seems so lost in his role with the Mets. Shortly after signing De Aza, the Mets re-signed Cespedes which made De Aza the fifth outfielder on the team and basically a permanent pinch-hitter.
Even when there has been playing time for De Aza due to injuries, he hasn’t been able to get into any sort of groove at the plate. This season De Aza has totaled a .176 batting average, two home runs, and six RBIs. He has truly been one of the worst hitters on the team and hopefully, the All-Star break will allow him to clear his mind.
The Mets’ outfield is still rather crowded even with injuries, but De Aza could be a great weapon off of the bench as a pinch-hitter if he can hit like the back of his baseball card says he can.
