To nobody’s surprise, Travis d’Arnaud once again spent a good chunk of the first half of the season on the disabled list leading to more playing time for Kevin Plawecki. It wasn’t too long ago that Plawecki was thought to be a prospect that could challenge d’Arnaud for the starting job at catcher, but he has flopped in every opportunity given.

In 73 games last season, Plawecki totaled a .219 batting average, three home runs, and 21 RBIs. Pretty much everyone was disappointed with Plawecki, and this season was even worse. In 2016, Plawecki has totaled a .194 batting average, one home run, and 10 RBIs in 41 games. When d’Arnaud returned from injury, the Mets decided to send Plawecki back down to the minors instead of Rene Rivera. Even though Rivera has been pretty awful as a hitter this season, the Mets decided that they like his ability to call games and play defense.

Even though he was hyped as a decent catching prospect, it has become quite apparent that Plawecki needs to really make some improvements before he deserves another shot in the majors. The Mets will hope that d’Arnaud has got his annual trip to the disabled list out of the way in the first half of the season, as they can’t afford to have Plawecki as their starting catching again.
