New York Giants: Can Ryan Nassib Be a Starting Quarterback
By Nick Ziegler
Ryan Nassib is entering the final season of his contract with the New York Giants. Does he have what it takes to be a starter one day?
After being drafted by the New York Giants in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft, quarterback Ryan Nassib will be entering his final season under contract with the Giants. Nassib was selected as a bit of a project from Syracuse, but we haven’t seen much of him on the field in the NFL due to the durability of Eli Manning.

Manning has proven to be one of the most durable quarterbacks in the NFL since being drafted by the Giants, as his backups are simply there to hold a clipboard and collect a paycheck. Despite rarely playing in the NFL, Nassib has impressed Manning on the practice field.
“I think Ryan’s done a great job. He’s a hard worker, he’s smart,” Giants starter Eli Manning told James Kratch of NJ.com. “Just from watching him and how he prepares, how he makes plays in practice, his football mind and ability, there’s no reason he can’t be a starter.”
This offseason will be a difficult one for Nassib, who might elect to sign elsewhere with the hope of fighting for a starting job. While it is an extremely small sample size, Nassib has totaled 128 passing yards and one passing touchdown on nine completions in his career.
"“It’s something you can’t really think about. When the time comes, all I have to do is make sure I’m ready for it,” Nassib said to Kratch. “It’s something if I take care of in the meeting room and on the field, all that stuff will work out.”"
In the NFL, teams are always looking for quarterbacks that may have been overlooked by other teams, and Nassib might fall into that category this offseason. Manning has been impressed by how far Nassib has come as a backup, and 2017 might be the year for Nassib to try and become a starter.
“He’s very bright and throws the ball well,” Manning said to Kratch. “I’ve been impressed with his progress.”

Unless something crazy happens to Manning, Nassib will likely not be the starting quarterback for the Giants until he would be close to 30-years-old. This preseason will be an important time for Nassib to showcase what he can do for teams this offseason, as he likely won’t get that chance during the regular season.
