Mets Rumors: Red Sox Interested in Matt Harvey Last Offseason
By Nick Ziegler
Recent New York Mets rumors have emerged about the Boston Red Sox being interested in Matt Harvey during the offseason.
It was a great 2015 season for Matt Harvey, who was the Comeback Player of the Year after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Last season, Harvey totaled a 13-8 record and 2.71 ERA. The Red Sox didn’t have the success that they are accustomed to in 2015, and that led to a lot of change for them this offseason.

Pitching was the biggest area of need for the Red Sox, and according to the Boston Herald, they were in contact with a lot of teams about their aces, including the Mets. In addition to talking about names like Jose Fernandez and Gerrit Cole, the Red Sox expressed interest in Harvey.
The Mets certainly have a surplus of starting pitching with Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz, and Zack Wheeler. The thought of the Mets looking to move one of these pitchers to acquire some help for their offense eventually isn’t a crazy idea, and that is something that the Red Sox would have been able to offer.
Acquiring a pitcher like Harvey would have cost the Red Sox a lot, and the conversations appeared to start the conversation with players like Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts. Even though the Red Sox signed David Price this offseason, they still have the desire to acquire a top pitcher for their run to the postseason.

This season, Harvey has struggled for the Mets after a really poor start to the season. In 2016, Harvey has totaled a 4-9 record and 4.76 ERA. The Mets could desperately use some help in their lineup, but it would be shocking to see them move any of their pitchers even if it was bringing back batters like Betts or Bogaerts.
It is unknown how far the talks every got between the two teams, but the reluctance of the Red Sox to trade Betts and Bogaerts likely led to a quick conversation.
