With the New York Jets and every NFL team breaking away before training camp, it’s a good time to give an early assessment on projected winners for highly contested roster positions.

The Jets have several spots up for grabs in the summer, including a few starting spots. Organized team activities and mandatory minicamp practices without pads won’t tell the whole story on who’s in a position to start, but it gives an initial look at the competition.

Head coach Todd Bowles has already established quarterback Geno Smith as the starter, sans Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Bryce Petty as the primary backup. Though, he’s been reluctant to give full evaluations on other positions without a look at his players in pads.

The Jets’ first-round pick Darron Lee remains unsigned, but his contractual hold up isn’t expected to last through training camp.

New York’s backfield underwent substantial changes in the offseason due to Chris Ivory’s departure. Running back Stevan Ridley suffered ACL and MCL injuries during the 2014 season, which hurt his production in the following year with the Jets. He signed with the Detroit Lions via free agency.

The Jets hope to maintain their defensive toughness while building upon offensive coordinator Chan Gailey’s system. What pieces must fall in place to accomplish both objectives? Which players have taken an early lead in contested roster spots?
