Last offseason after the injury to Smith, the Jets decided to sign veteran quarterback Matt Flynn as some insurance. Flynn was shockingly released by the Jets before the start of the season, as they rolled the dice with Petty as the backup to Fitzpatrick for the beginning of the season.

Flynn didn’t get a chance to play in a game last season, but he is a veteran that has had success in the NFL. Flynn became a well-known name from his time with the Green Bay Packers. Generally, backup quarterbacks aren’t asked to do much when they come in for an injured starter, but Flynn had a great performance in a game against the Chicago Bears in 2011.

In that memorable game against the Bears, Flynn totaled six touchdown passes in a thrilling 45-41 win. That great performance by Flynn would earn him a nice contract with the Seattle Seahawks, but he was beaten out by a rookie named Russell Wilson.

Flynn has bounced around a bit since leaving Green Bay, but he would be fairly familiar with the Jets’ offense from last season. Adding a veteran who is already familiar with the playbook would be a pretty solid move for the Jets, and that is something that Flynn brings.
