New York Yankees News: Yet another first baseman looks destined for the disabled list, as recently called up Chris Parmelee looked to badly injury his hamstring Thursday night.

New York Yankees news continues to be negative for the first baseman. The Yankees have gotten on a bit of a hot streak on the field recently, winning four straight games. A big contributor to that has been the play of recent call-up, Chris Parmelee.

Parmelee is not someone the Yankees ever thought they would be turning to at first base with the major league club. But, injuries have forced the journeyman into playing time. The Yankees have seen three first baseman go down with injuries, as Gregory Bird is out for the season after undergoing shoulder surgery in the spring, Dustin Ackley joined him with a shoulder surgery of his own and Mark Teixeira was lost earlier in the week with a knee injury.

Parmelee was the next person up, and gave the Yankees a huge spark. First base has been barren of production for most of the season, as Teixeira has struggled mightily battling a number of injuries. He is slashing .180/.271/.263 with only three home runs and 12 RBI. He has not hit a home run since April 13th, and has only four RBI since that date as well.

Parmelee looked like he would reach those numbers by this weekend, as he exploded onto the scene. In his first start on Wednesday, Parmelee launched two home runs and a double, racking up three RBI and scoring thrice in the process. Thursday he was off to another productive start at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a run and RBI.

But, the injury bug would hit him as well. First base looks to be cursed for the Yankees this season, as Parmelee is the fourth one to suffer an injury there this season. He injured himself Thursday stretching for a ball from shortstop Didi Gregorius, and came up lame. Parmelee had to be helped off the field by manager Joe Girardi and assistant athletic director Tim Lentych.

The injury looked pretty serious, and Girardi said that he would be shocked if Parmelee didn’t end up on the disabled list. That is not something you want to hear, especially with how well he was playing in the early going and that the Yankees are running out of people to turn to.

Girardi could opt to use Rob Refsnyder, who was pushed into emergency duty in recent days, as his everyday first baseman. He has little experience, but has been productive at the plate in his short MLB tenure thus far. The Yankees have veteran Nick Swisher in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but they seem to be hesitant to call him up as he has had his own struggles in the minor leagues.

Some fans have clamored for Carlos Beltran to be moved to first base, but it was not something he seemed fond of when talking about it after the game. It is hard to blame him, as he has spent his entire 18-year major league career in the outfield; making a move at this point in time would be tough.

So, for now, it looks like Refsnyder will get the first shot. If the rest of the lineup can keep producing as they have been recently, it won’t matter much who is playing first base as the rest of the lineup is beginning to click all at the same time.
