New York Yankees: 5 Greatest Catchers of All-Time
By Nick Ziegler
2. Bill Dickey
One of the original great Yankees was catcher Bill Dickey, who made his debut way back in 1928 and Dickey went on to be the catcher for the Yankees throughout his entire 17-year career. In his great career, Dickey totaled a .313 batting average, 202 home runs, and 1,202 RBIs.
Dickey was one of the best hitting catchers in the history of the franchise, as his .313 lifetime average is best among catchers with 1,000 plate appearances. Dickey also has totaled the second-most RBIs among catchers with the same amount of plate appearances.
The great statistics by Dickey earned him 11 All-Star appearances, and he finished in the Top-5 of the MVP voting three times. Dickey was able to help the Yankees win seven World Series, as he was victorious in seven of his eight trips for the title, which is an unthinkable feat nowadays.
Dickey’s numbers did drop in the postseason, however, as he totaled a .255 batting average, five home runs, and 24 RBIs in 38 games. The great career for Dickey earned him a spot in the Baseball Hall-of-Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Dickey began a stretch of truly amazing play behind the plate for the Yankees, as he passed the baton to another Hall-of-Famer.
