4. Thurman Munson

The next great Yankees catcher is Thurman Munson, who played mostly during the 1970s during one of the most entertaining time periods for the Yankees. Munson played his entire 11-year career with the Yankees before his life was taken early in a plane crash.

Munson’s career started off very well, as he was named the 1970 AL Rookie of the Year. In his rookie season, Munson batted .302 with six home runs, 53 RBIs, and a .386 OBP. Munson would go on to make the All-Star team seven of the next eight seasons, and in 1976, he won the AL MVP award. In his MVP season, Munson totaled a .302 batting average, 17 home runs, and 102 RBIs.

While Munson had a very good regular season career for the Yankees, he was one of the best when it came to the postseason. In three postseason appearances, Munson totaled a .357 batting average, three home runs, and 22 RBIs. Munson helped the Yankees win back-to-back World Series in 1977 and 1978, and he batted .320 in the World Series both years.

The great postseason numbers for Munson in addition to the seven All-Star appearances makes Munson easily one of the best catchers in the history of the franchise.
