New York Mets news is disappointing for David Wright, as he will be placed on the disabled list and sidelined for an extended period of time.

New York Mets news was not good involving third base man David Wright. The starting third baseman and captain received bad news Thursday as it was revealed that he will have to go on the disabled list because of his herniated disk, and he is expected to miss an extended period of time.

Wright had been visiting with doctors and trying a number of things to try and relieve the pain in his neck. When he visited with doctors last weekend, Wright was given oral anti-inflammatory pills to try and ease the pain. After the 48-hour period didn’t provide much, Wright received an injection in his neck.

Like the pills, the injection didn’t do enough to alleviate the pain enough to get Wright back on the field. As a result, he will hit the DL and be sidelined for the foreseeable future. While doctors continue to look for a way to get Wright healthy, one option not on the table currently is surgery. But, it is something that cold be considered down the road.

Manager Terry Collins discussed the Wright injury and likened it to the one that Bobby Parnell had. Parnell had to eventually undergo surgery back in September 2013 to fix the problem. The Mets hope that is not the end result, but it certainly could be an option if the injury is as similar to Parnell’s as Collins says that it is.

This just adds to the injury misery that Wright has battled this season. Wright has a chronic problem with spinal stenosis. He also dealt with shoulder soreness earlier in the season, and now has the neck problem to deal with. Collins gave some insight to the injuries woes that Wright has battled, as it is hard to not feel bad for him.

"“This guy has been a special player in baseball,” Collins said Tuesday, when the seriousness of the neck issue became apparent. “Certainly being the captain and the face of this organization, a manager’s worst nightmare is to see a star start to fade. I think David’s got a lot of baseball left in him because of the way he prepares and the way he gets himself ready. But it’s hard to watch what he’s going through … as good as he was. I’ll tell you: There’s a lot of guys in this room that would not do what he does every day just to get ready to go play a baseball game. He’s still special. He’s still a great player.”"

The Mets will have to replace Wright for the time being, and it is slim pickings. Wilmer Flores, who was expected to take over first base with Duda out, will probably receive the first shot. With James Loney acquired to play first base, Flores can move back to one of his more natural positions.

In a corresponding roster move, the Mets will re-call infielder Matt Reynolds from Triple-A Las Vegas. He could receive his first legitimate shot at playing him in the major leagues, as his other call-ups have been little more than cameos.

Whatever the Mets decide to do at third base, they are hoping that the production level can be better than what Wright was giving, as he was batting only .226 on the season. But, one thing that cannot be replaced his his leadership and experience, something the Mets will miss in the clubhouse until he can return.
