New York Mets: 6 Options To Replace Lucas Duda
David Wright has been entrenched at third base for the Mets for the past 12 years. It would be weird to see him anywhere else but at the hot corner, but with the back problems he is dealing with, there has been talk of him moving across the diamond.
Wright is a team player, and will do whatever it takes to help the organization. On Sunday he told Collins that he would play first base if needed. It is a move that may happen down the road, but at this time it is not something being considered currently according to Collins.
While it may not be in the cards now, that does not mean things won’t change in the coming weeks. While Wright was unable to do any extra work during the spring because of his back, that could be the reason the Mets roll the dice and move him. While a midseason move with no prior experience would be tough to pull off, Wright has struggled at third base at times this season making throws.
If that persists, the Mets will have to figure out something if they want to keep him in the lineup. Moving him to first base could be an option, as it would eliminate almost all of the throwing that Wright needs to do.
But, do the Mets want to find new ways to keep Wright in the lineup? He has struggled this season, batting only .224 with almost no power, slugging .384 with only 12 extra-base hits. But, Wright has been getting on base, leading the team in that department with an on-base percentage of .358.
Wright needs to cut down on the strikeouts and figure things out at the plate; it would be tough to imagine that happening with a move across the diamond. A move may come about later on, but right now it is tough to imagine Wright playing first base outside of an emergency situation.
