Recent New York Jets rumors have been about a possible deal that nearly led to the Jets and New York Giants making a draft day deal.

Coming into the NFL Draft, it was no secret that the New York Jets were looking to move up in the first round, as they coveted the first overall pick at multiple times leading up to the draft. After D’Brickashaw Ferguson retired, the Jets expressed an interest in moving up to select a left tackle to replace him.

Shortly after Ferguson retired, the Jets were able to trade for Ryan Clady to replace him, but that still left a void at the quarterback position. Prior to the Los Angeles Rams acquiring the first overall pick to select Jared Goff, the Jets also coveted the pick to select the quarterback from Cal.

One of the biggest storylines of the NFL Draft was the fall of left tackle Laremy Tunsil. After a video was released from his social media accounts of him smoke weed with a bong and a gas mask, Tunsil began to fall in the first round. Prior to the video, Tunsil was expected to be the first tackle taken in the draft, but instead he fell to the Miami Dolphins with the 13th overall pick.

According to Gary Meyers of the New York Daily News, the Jets tried to trade picks with the Giants to select Tunsil with the 10th overall pick. The Giants had a rough time in the first round, as they missed out on Leonard Floyd and Jack Conklin who they both liked a lot but they weren’t willing to move down.

The Jets came in with an offer of their first and second round picks to move up 10 spots, but that wasn’t enough to convince the Giants not to take cornerback Eli Apple. Many believe that the Giants reached on Apple, as many experts had him actually being selected by the Jets with the 20th overall pick. If the Jets came in with another pick in the trade, a deal might have been completed by the two teams.

Adding Tunsil would have been an interesting move by the Jets, as there isn’t a glaring hole on the offensive line, but he certainly would have been able to compete with either Breno Giacomini or Brian Winters for a starting spot right away. The Jets instead used their picks on Darron Lee and Christian Hackenberg as the trade fell through with the Giants.

It certainly would have been a huge storyline if the two sides were able to come to an agreement, as Tunsil is certainly going to be a talked about rookie this season.
