New York Mets starting pitcher Bartolo Colon surpassed Pedro Martinez on the Dominican pitchers’ win list, defeating the Atlanta Braves Monday night.

The New York Mets were able to get back into the win column on Monday night, as they took game one of their three-game series against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field. The Mets had their winning streak snapped by Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, but it did not take long for them to get their winning streak going again.

In the process of defeating the Braves 4-1, Bartolo Colon continued moving up the wins list for Dominican pitchers. It was third time is the charm for Colon, who was unable to get a victory in his first two chances of breaking his tie with Pedro Martinez for second place. Colon received no decisions against the Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds, but tonight he got the best of the Braves for win number 220.

It was a dominant performance from Colon, who picked on a Braves lineup that is arguably the worst in baseball with only five collective home runs thus far on the season. Colon made easy work of them, throwing eight shutout innings, allowing seven hits with zero walks and seven strikeouts. That continued Colon’s streak to start the season with three earned runs or less allowed, which is now up to five.

Colon threw 99 pitches in the outing, as he was close to re-writing the Mets’ history book. Had he finished the game with a shutout, Colon would have become the oldest pitcher to record a shutout, breaking the record he already holds; he threw a shutout against the Miami Marlins last season at 42 years and 104 days old.

The Mets made sure that Colon would get that win early, as their power surge came back Monday night. The Mets launched three home runs in the bottom of the first inning, as David Wright got things started with a solo shot. Yoenis Cespedes then hit a two-run shot, knocking in Michael Conforto as well. Lucas Duda went back-to-back with Cespedes to give the Mets a 4-0 lead, which they never relinquished.

That was actually all the scoring that the Mets did on the night, as the Braves held them scoreless the remainder of the game. The Braves scratched one across in the ninth inning off Jeurys Familia to make it the final score of 4-1.
