Mets Rumors: Will Not Be Present At Tim Lincecum Showcase
New York Mets Rumors: Former Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum is set to have a showcase Friday, but it does not sound like the Mets will be present.
New York Mets rumors have been quiet recently, as the team has been rolling recently. Sunday’s loss to the San Francisco Giants snapped their eight-game winning streak, but the Mets are still feeling good about where they currently stand with a 15-8 record. But, one recent rumor involves former Giants’ pitcher Tim Lincecum.
The two-time Cy Young award winner became a free agent this offseason and did not latch on with any team. He had hip surgery last season, throwing only 76 1/3 innings with a 4.13 ERA, 1.48 WHIP with 60 strikeouts and 38 walks. It is a far cry from the dominance that he showed from 2008-2011.
But, Lincecum is finally ready to show teams that he is ready to return, as a pitching showcase has been scheduled for Friday, according to MLB Network and WFAN’s Jon Heyman.
There has been varying levels of interest in Lincecum thus far, as upwards of 20 teams have inquired about him. There should be a number of teams at the showcase in Scottsdale, Arizona as Lincecum is throwing 90-91 consistently and they will want to see what he has left in the tank. Also, with a number of teams already in the market for starting pitching help, Lincecum should be able to land a job relatively quickly if the showcase goes well.
While many teams will be there, some teams will be skipping the throwing exhibition. One of the teams that will be skipping is the Mets.

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets will not be present when Lincecum takes the mound on Friday. Puma says that the Mets do not plan on watching Lincecum throw because the Mets are comfortable with the depth they already have pitching wise.
While you can never have enough pitching, the Mets are certainly challenging that old adage. They are already loaded in the starting rotation, as Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey and Steven Matz are already in place. Bartolo Colon is the fifth starter currently, and will be holding down that spot until Zack Wheeler is able to return from his Tommy John rehab.
The depth only continues after that, as the Mets have had Logan Verrett as a spot starter, and still have former top prospect Rafael Montero if need be. That is eight major league pitchers already, so it is safe to say Lincecum would not be breaking into the rotation for the Mets unless something catastrophic occurred.

Lincecum has made it clear that he would like to return as a starting pitcher, so that alone should be enough to turn the Mets off from going to the showcase. Things could change between now and Friday, but it seems safe to say that the Mets will not be one of the teams battling it out for Lincecum’s services following his showcase on Friday.
