New York Giants: 5 Targets For Day 2 Of 2016 NFL Draft
Ohio State Safety Vonn Bell
One of the biggest needs for the Giants heading into the draft was safety. Outside of Landon Collins, the Giants have very little they can rely on at the safety position. Luckily for the Giants, arguably the best cover safety of the class is still available heading into Day 2.
In Collins the Giants have a thumper at safety. He excels playing the running game, so the Giants need someone that can play centerfield and coverage next to him. That is something Bell does, and does well.
Bell has elite cover skills for a safety with good instincts in coverage. He can match up with most running backs and tight ends, which is what you need from your safety. He also showcases outstanding range when playing the centerfield role, which the Giants could use next to Collins who excels near the line of scrimmage.
Bell has the ball skills that the Giants desperately need as well. In his last two seasons spent mostly as a starter, Bell piled up 15 pass breakups and eight interceptions. A cover safety and playmaker? Those are the two things Collins lacks, so Bell would make a very solid partner for him in the secondary.
Bell is one of the best graded players remaining in the draft, so there is a chance that the Giants may have to make a move up if they really want him. We saw them do it with a safety they really wanted last season, when they moved up seven spots from 40 to 33 to select Collins.
