The Giants almost always seem to select a running back during the NFL Draft. Usually it comes later on, and this season will be no different as they will take Josh Ferguson with their last pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.

The Giants used a four-man committee out of the backfield last season and didn’t get much results. Rashad Jennings came on at the end of the season when given most of the chances, but he had to compete with Andre Williams, Shane Vereen and Orleans Darkwa for touches. The Giants signed Bobby Rainey this offseason as well, but adding another running back to the stable isn’t out of the realm of possibilities.

Ferguson would come to the Giants with a clear role as he excels in the passing game. He ran for over 700 yards each of the last three seasons, adding 137 receptions as well. The passing game is where he could make his bread and butter in the NFL, if given the chance to develop.

He could use some polish in the passing game, but the tools are there. He can find who he is supposed to be blocking, and can throw a chop block when needed. He could get more aggressive in pass protection, but he flashes that he can do it.

He has had some durability issues though, so he will never become a featured back or workhorse. But, if he puts in the work he can be a successful third down or passing down back. The Giants have Vereen in that role currently, but you can never have enough pass catchers coming out of the backfield. It is the Giants’ MO to select a running back at some point, and Ferguson is the one we are selecting as the running back to be this year.
