New York Giants: 2016 Seven-Round Mock Draft
CB Cyrus Jones, Alabama; Round 4, Pick 11, 109 Overall
Height: 5-feet-9 ⅞ inches
Weight: 197 pounds
The Giants made a splash in their secondary by signing Janoris Jenkins early in free agency to pair with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. But, beyond those two there is very little in the cupboard for the Giants, so it is an area that they can and should target at some point in the draft. What they really need is someone capable of playing the slot, and they can get that with Jones.
Jones brings a lot of experience with him to the NFL, as he has started for three seasons at Alabama. He has also grown a lot as a player, which is something the Giants are happy to see. He has outstanding instincts and recognition as the work he puts in off the field helps make up for his deficiencies on it.
The only thing really holding Jones back is his size. Standing under 5-feet-10 inches, Jones struggles with some receivers that know how to use their size. He has improved in this area though, as his ability to turn and locate the ball earlier on makes it easier for him to make a play on it despite being smaller than most of the people he defends.
Where Jones would also help the Giants is that he is not afraid to stick his nose in the run game. He actually excels in run defense, as he uses his size to gain leverage and uses his fundamentals to finish off the play.
He has experience working in the slot, which is where the Giants need the most help currently. Jones also can help in the return game, as he had four punt returns for touchdowns last season. At this point, Jones would be a no-brainer pick for the Giants as he could fill multiple needs and projects as good value at this spot.
