Fourth-Round: Cyrus Jones

In the fourth-round of the 2016 NFL Draft, the Jets will be taking their first defensive player of the draft in Cyrus Jones from Alabama. As a freshman, Jones was actually an offensive player, as he totaled five receptions while mostly playing on special teams.

In his sophomore season, Jones made the switch to defense in Nick Saban’s cornerback rotation, and actually played pretty well. In 2013, Jones was able to total two interceptions and started in five games.

Jones would earn the full-time starting job as a junior, and continued to play well, as he totaled three interceptions and 16 passes defended, which both led the team. The Jets could certainly use some depth at the cornerback position as they released Antonio Cromartie early on in the offseason to save money. While Cromartie didn’t play great in 2015, he was still a body out there.

The plan is to move Buster Skrine from inside cornerback to the outside to replace Cromartie, and Marcus Williams will be moving inside. Adding Jones would give the Jets some needed depth at the position, and a player that has proven to be a playmaker in the secondary, who can also help on special teams as a returner.
