Kyle O’Quinn

Kyle O’Quinn was acquired by the Knicks in a sign-and-trade with the Orlando Magic, agreeing to a four-year, $16 million deal. It looked like a steal on paper for the Knicks, as O’Quinn produced with the Magic but was stuck in a bit of a logjam with all of the young talent that the Magic had. With the Knicks he should have had a distinguished role as the backup power forward/center, but it never truly came to fruition.

Like Seraphin, O’Quinn came to the Knicks thinking he would see the court more but it just didn’t happen. O’Quinn had arguably the worst season of his career as well, as his numbers dropped across the board in his first campaign with the Knicks compared to his last one with the Magic.

O’Quinn’s minutes dropped to 11.8 per game this season from 16.2 with the Magic, but actually put up similar stats. He averaged 4.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 0.8 blocks per game despite barely playing. With numbers like that, it makes little sense why O’Quinn wasn’t given more minutes off the bench.

With an inconsistent role, O’Quinn was never able to get things on track consistently. The first of his four-year deal was a dud with the Knicks, but he should be given a chance at backup minutes once again next season. He fits the Knicks schemes and provides energy and hustle off the bench.
