Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees is officially retired from the game of baseball, but could a career in politics be next?

The 2016 Presidential race is heating up for both parties with Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and John Kasich battling for the Republican nomination while Hilary Clinton and Bernie Sanders compete for the Democratic nomination.

With the campaigns of candidates in New York for the upcoming caucus, there have been chatter about one of New York’s favorite people being in the running for Vice President. A few weeks ago, Jeter was asked if he would be Donald Trump’s running mate if he won the Republican nomination, to which Jeter didn’t seem too interested in.

“That sounds like too much work,” Jeter said while visiting Cuba with Major League Baseball in late March.

Now, the Ohio Governor has said that he would love to have Jeter as his running mate.

“People say, ‘If you win, who’s going to be your vice president? Somebody that I would have under consideration? Jeter,” Kasich told reporters while visiting the Bronx.

Kasich, who is trailing Trump in New York is obviously playing around when he mentions Jeter as a possible running mate, but even the mention of the captain in the Bronx may help Kasich gain some much-needed ground on Trump.

Jeter was a great leader on the field, but a future career in politics seems unlikely for the 40-year-old who would much rather be an owner of a baseball team than a politician.
