New York Yankees News: The Yankees thought they avoided a problem when Andrew Miller’s X-Ray came back negative, but a CT scan revealed a fracture in his wrist.

More from Empire Writes Back

New York Yankees news was not as positive Wednesday as originally thought. The Yankees thought that they were catching a break with reliever Andrew Miller, as his X-Ray came back negative. But, after undergoing further testing and taking a CT Scan, it was revealed that Miller indeed suffered an injury, as he fractured a bone in his right wrist.

Miller was hit with a line drive during the Yankees’ Spring Training game against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday when the injury occurred. Miller was set to take over as the closer while Aroldis Chapman served his 30-game suspension, so this is a potentially devastating blow.

The Yankees looked like they would have a dominating trio at the back end of their bullpen, but we will not see the three of them in action together until May at the earliest. With Miller now looking at an absence, Dellin Betances should take over as the team’s closer.

“It was scary,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “You see a guy leave the mound like that and you worry. That doesn’t say that there’s something definitely broken, but it said it really hurt.”

Unfortunately for Miller and the Yankees, something was broken. The team announced that Miller will be evaluated by a hand specialst to determine what the next step in the process should be. No timetable has been given yet for his return, as they want to see the extent of the injury first.

The Yankees have some experience having to patch the bullpen without Miller at the back end. Miller was oustanding last season in his first season as closer for the Yankees, saving 36 of 38 games, but did miss a month of the season because of injury. The Yankees will once again have to patch things together in his absence.

“We went without Miller last year for a month,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. “You want to be with everybody at all times, but it’s not the way the game works.”

This is the second blow that the Yankees bullpen has suffered this week. Previously to Miller going down, the Yankees lost reliever Bryan Mitchell to an injury to the big toe on his left foot. The injury occurred while he was covering first base in a game on Tuesday, and was sent back to Tampa Bay for an MRI.
