New York Knicks Rumors: Despite being signed for the remainder of the season, it seems as if newly signed guard Tony Wroten will not be seeing the court for the Knicks this season.

New York Knicks rumors continue to swirl despite the trade deadline passing weeks ago and the Knicks having a full roster. The Knicks hit the 15-man roster maximum when they officially signed guard Tony Wroten to a contract earlier in the week. Wroten and the Knicks agreed to a multi-year deal, as he will be signed for the remainder of this season and for a non-guaranteed deal for the 2016-17 season as well.

But, Wroten will not be seeing the court this season for the Knicks. Despite using their last roster spot on him, one that was previously occupied by the NBA D-League’s Westchester Knicks’ Thanasis Antetokounmpo and Jimmer Fredette. Neither of those players received much playing time with the Knicks, and it seems the same will be happening with Wroten this time around.

According to Ian Begley of ESPN New York via interim head coach Kurt Rambis, Wroten will not take the court for the Knicks for the remainder of the regular season. Not only will he not see the court in a regular season game, he will not even see the practice court with his new team.

With the playoffs seeming unlikely at this time, it makes sense to get Wroten under contract so that another team cannot sign him. But, not having him even at practice for the remainder of the season, and waiting until the summer to evaluate him, makes little sense.

More from Empire Writes Back

Wroten partially tore his ACL last February with the Philadelphia 76ers, but was able to return earlier this season. The results were not pretty, as Wroten looked extremely rusty working his way back from a pretty serious injury. He averaged 8.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game to go along with an alarmingly high 3.6 turnovers despite playing only 18 minutes per game.

Because of the play that he displayed in that sample size, and after reviewing his medicals, the Knicks have decided that Wroten will not be seeing the court this season in any capacity. They will instead wait until the summer when he is more healthy to evaluate him and see what he can bring to the team.

Despite not having a guaranteed contract, Wroten should find his way into the rotation. Seeing what the Knicks lack offensively this season, namely someone to attack the rim and put pressure on the opposing defense, Wroten will help out. Attacking the rim is what he does best, as the 22-year old has attempted more than half of his career shots at the rim.

Wroten has shown promise in his career previously with the 76ers, so he is someone the Knicks should keep around and see how it works out. Without a first round pick this season, the Knicks need to get creative with adding young, promising talent to the roster; adding someone such as Wroten with a 10-day contract is one way to do that, and a good one at that.
