New York Yankees News: The Yankees have reassigned a number of players to minor league camp, headlined by outfield prospect Aaron Judge.

The New York Yankees are well into Spring Training, as they have already played 11 games. The results haven’t been great, as they are only 3-8, but they are still waiting on some regulars to get into playing shape and return to the field, which will take a couple weeks. Despite there being multiple weeks until the regular season gets underway, the Yankees have already made some moves reassigning players from the major league camp to the minor league one.

ESPN writer Marly Rivera had the full list, as the Yankees reassigned 17 players to the minor league camp after yesterday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Of that list, the player that sticks out the most is outfield prospect Aaron Judge. Judge was a long shot to making the Yankees roster out of Spring Training because of the logjam that they have, but it is still a bit surprising for some people to see his chance of making the team get cut this early in the process.

One person that does not seem too surprised that it went down this way is general manager Brian Cashman. After it was announced that he was being reassigned, Cashman was asked about the chances of seeing Judge at the major league level this season, and his answer was, “We’ll see.” That is not a ringing endorsement, but it makes sense given what he said when elaborating more.

As he continued to talk, he made it clear that if an injury occurs in the outfield that Aaron Hicks, whom the Yankees acquired from the Minnesota Twins for catcher John Ryan Murphy, would receive the first chance to start. His versatility to play any of the three outfield spots, while Judge is strictly a right fielder, would require less moving around and shifting for the Yankees.

Despite Judge expected to start the season in Triple-A, he will be lurking for a major league call-up. While Hicks will receive the first shot if an injury occurs, Judge should be next in line. For a team as old as the Yankees, injuries are probably inevitable so Judge has to remain ready.

Other familiar names joining Judge in the minor league camp will be fellow top prospects in infielder Jorge Mateo and pitcher James Kaprielian. Mateo is a couple of years off from making an impact at the major league level, but if the starting rotation struggles as much as it did last season, or injuries occur there as well, Kaprielian could be in line to make some starts.
