New York Jets: 5 Most Important Free Agents
By Nick Ziegler
– Ryan Fitzpatrick
The trade to acquire Ryan Fitzpatrick from the Houston Texans will go down as a great one in the history books for general manager, Mike Maccagnan, as the veteran quarterback had a career year with the Jets.
Even though the Jets didn’t make the playoffs in 2015, their offense was leaps and bounds better than it was in previous year, and Fitzpatrick had a lot to do with that. In 2015, Fitzpatrick totaled 3,905 passing yards, 31 passing touchdowns, and 15 interceptions.
Fitzpatrick was originally brought in to be the backup to Geno Smith, but was able to make the most of Smith’s jaw surgery in the preseason, and never looked back. The quarterback position is the most important position on the football field, and although Fitzpatrick is not a franchise quarterback, he is the best option for the Jets in all likelihood this offseason.
Next: Who is the best QB in Jets franchise history?
Being that Fitzpatrick hasn’t been a great quarterback for most of his career, the Jets likely won’t have to spend a ton of money on the 33-year-old, who is likely just looking for some stability after playing on six teams in his career.
The Jets’ no.1 priority this offseason will likely to bring back Fitzpatrick, who will hopefully lead them to the playoffs in 2016.
