New York Jets: 5 Most Important Free Agents
By Nick Ziegler
One of the Jets’ key free agents this offseason is running back, Bilal Powell, who had a very good season in 2015 for the Jets.
In the 2011 NFL Draft, the Jets selected Powell in the fourth-round, and after a quiet rookie season, Powell began to have an impact in the Jets’ offense.
Powell first broke out in the 2013 season for the Jets, as he totaled 697 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, 36 receptions, and 272 receiving yards. Despite the good season in 2013, the Jets decided to bring in Chris Johnson in 2014, which really limited the role of Powell in the Jets’ offense that season.
Johnson was cut by the Jets after just one season, and that opened the door back open for Powell. Last season, Powell totaled 313 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, a 4.5 yards per carry, 47 receptions, and 388 receiving yards.
Powell really proved that he is an excellent weapon out of the backfield as a receiver, and towards the end of the season was playing more effectively than Chris Ivory. Both running backs are free agents, which makes it somewhat unlikely that both will be back in 2016.
