New York Knicks Rumors: If the Knicks are going to land a point guard, will they have to part ways with the rights to their 21-year old center, Guillermo Hernangomez?

It is no secret that the New York Knicks are in pursuit of an upgrade at the point guard position at the as the NBA Trade Deadline is only hours away. The Knicks do not have many assets that other teams want to acquire in exchange for a point guard, which will make bringing a point guard to New York a tall task.

Phil Jackson will have to think outside the box to acquire a point guard, and it seems like other teams are beginning to do that for him. While there may not be many attractive pieces currently on the team, as the Knicks are trying to move Jose Calderon and attach a player like Kyle O’Quinn to him, there is supposedly one player garnering interest for other general managers

According to Sportando, sources have reported that the Knicks are receiving calls from interested teams in their overseas prospect Guillermo Hernangomez. The Knicks selected Hernangomez with their second round pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, and are supposedly very high on the young Spanish product.

But, with their lack of assets, the Knicks could be forced to part ways with Hernangomez if they wish to upgrade their point guard position at the trade deadline the source also added.

The draft rights to the 21-year old Hernangomez could be the most valuable asset that the Knicks currently have. His contract with Real Madrid, his current team in Spain, is up after this season and he is interested in joining the Knicks for the 2016-17 season. They are hoping that they can retain him, but the calling of the NBA may be too much for him to pass up, as he will also get the chance to play alongside his friend Kristaps Porzingis once again.

Porzingis and Hernangomez played and lived together during Porzingis’ last two years playing overseas, and they developed a strong friendship. Porzingis said, “It’s great to see Willy Hernangomez going well, I hope to have you soon on the Knicks.”

Jackson is also high on the Hernangomez, saying that he loves the guy and likened him to Luis Scola, just a stronger version of him.

While the Knicks are high on their prospect, if they really want to upgrade the point guard position they may be forced to part ways with him. Parting ways with another young prospect for a team that is in a semi-rebuild does not make much sense, but if it upgrades the point guard position enough Jackson will strongly consider moving Hernangomez to get a deal done.
