New York Giants Rumors: Could Mohamed Sanu be a free agent target for the Giants to help get some talent around Odell Beckham Jr. at wide receiver?

The New York Giants have one of the best young wide receivers in the world in Odell Beckham Jr. But, they have very little else to count on opposite of him. Rueben Randle is not expected back with the Giants, and Victor Cruz‘s stats is up in the air since he has not appeared in a game since 2014 when he tore his patellar tendon. This year’s free agent class isn’t very deep at wide receiver, but could the Giants find some help for Beckham Jr.?

One player to keep an eye on is Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Mohamed Sanu. Sanu made good impact for the Bengals in 2014 trying to make up for the loss of superstar A.J. Green, registering 56 receptions for 790 yards and five touchdowns.

But, Sanu took a step back in 2015 with Green healthy, catching only 33 passes for 394 yards and zero touchdowns despite the Bengals having one of the stronger offenses in the NFL. He is now set to become a free agent, and there are some people that think he is someone the Giants could target.

More from Empire Writes Back

One of the people who believe that Sanu could be a target for the Giants is Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. The former Rutgers product is someone that La Canfora believes would be a solid compliment to Beckham Jr. on the opposite side of the field. As mentioned earlier, he thrived as the go-to guy when Green was out during the 2014, but they never made much of an effort to get him the ball once Green and Marvin Jones were healthy in 2015.

One person’s junk could be another person’s treasure, and this could the case with the Giants and Sanu. La Canfora thinks the Giants have a chance at landing Sanu and bringing him back home to New Jersey with something in the range of $5 million.

While that number is not crippling for a team that has the cap space that the Giants have, it does seem like a bit of a redundant addition. The Giants have no idea what to expect from Cruz, if he is back at all, so it makes sense to have more insurance, something they did not have last season. But, the Giants have a receiver already on the roster similar to Sanu in Dwayne Harris.

The Giants handed Harris a pretty hefty contract last season, giving him a five-year $17.5 million contract last offseason. Like Sanu, Harris is a strong special teams performer who does his work from the slot. Unlike Harris though, Sanu has shown he has the ability to play on the outside.

While the move may seem a little redundant on some levels, the Giants need all the talent they can get at receiver. Sanu would be an upgrade over what they currently have, and would bring some versatility to an offense in desperate need of some help around Beckham Jr.
