New York Giants News: Coaching Staff Continues To Grow
New York Giants News: The Giants filled the last open spot on their coaching staff, hiring former New England Patriots’ linebackers coach Patrick Graham.
The New York Giants got an unexpected early start on their offseason, as they had to revamp their coaching staff after Tom Coughlin stepped down as head coach. In his place, the Giants hired offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo to take over the reigns as head coach.
The Giants have been busy at work filling out the remainder of the coaching staff around McAdoo. Steve Spagnuolo is expected to be kept as defensive coordinator, while Mike Sullivan, who was quarterbacks coach last season, as been promoted to offensive coordinator.
Most of the additions that have been announced by the Giants have come on the offensive side of the ball, as they also hired Adam Henry, formally of the San Francisco 49ers, as their wide receiver coach. Henry has experience working with star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. at LSU, so that is considered a strong hire for the Giants as they look to keep him out of trouble on the field.

Now, the Giants have shifted their focus to the remainder of the staff. They have filled the opening for a strength and conditioning coach, as Jerry Palmieri was let go early last week. Palmieri was with the Giants for Coughlin’s whole 12-year tenure as the strength and conditioning coach. Injuries have been a big reason that the Giants have been derailed in recent seasons, so that could be a reason for a chance being made.
In his place, the Giants have hired Aaron Wellman, according to New York Daily News. Wellman was the assistant strength and conditioning coach for Notre Dame last season and was the director of strength and conditioning program for four seasons at Michigan before that.
In addition to their strength and conditioning opening, the Giants filled the last known opening on their coaching staff as they named a defensive line coach. For the position, the Giants were able to swoop in and land New England Patriots’ linebackers coach Patrick Graham.
Graham was with the Patriots for the past seven seasons, also spending time as the defensive coaching assistant and defensive line coach in addition to the linebackers coach. It is a solid addition to the Giants staff, as anyone hired from the Patriots coaching tree should be able to provide some solid information.

Graham hill be replacing former defensive line coach Robert Nunn, who was not retained when McAdoo was named head coach. While Graham is thought to be filling the last opening on the Giants staff, the New York Daily News’ sources say that he is not necessarily done building his staff. No assistants have been named either, so that could be the additions that the sources are referring to.
