The Mets outfield seems to be filled as of right now, but Brandon Nimmo could be knocking on the door very soon.

Despite the fact that the power that many people expected him to possess hasn’t showed yet, Nimmo has proven that he can get on base and limit his number of strikeouts, just like Cecchini. Nimmo has gotten bigger and stronger since joining the organization, and is able to drive the ball to all fields, a tool that will obviously be valuable as he progresses in his career.

The main concern for Nimmo has been his defense and speed. When he was drafted as the 13th overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, it was noted that he had extreme athleticism and speed. Today, however, his speed has diminished and his reads and routes in center field are also average at best, so if he loses any more speed, he will have to move to left or right field.

In 2015, he flew through every level (A, AA, AAA) and batted .269 with five home runs with 26 RBI’s and an OBP of .362 (48 walks) in 104 games.

While many scouts point at his diminished speed as a problem, he can still handle the center field position for the time being and he knows how to take a walk. And just by watching him take batting practice, he has raw power that we just haven’t seen a ton of in game action.

Nimmo will begin the season back in Las Vegas where he will be working on tapping into that raw power that his coaches and scouts want to see in the course of a game. It wouldn’t surprise me if Nimmo is promoted to the pros if an injury pops up in the outfield in 2016.
