New York Yankees: Prospects to Watch in 2016
4. Domingo Acevedo, RHP
In 2013, he New York Yankees signed the then 18-year old Domingo Acevedo out of the Dominican Republic. He made his professional debut on the Dominican Summer League Yankees, where he went 1-2 with a 2.63 ERA over 11 games (10 starts). He pitched in 41 innings and struck out 43 batters against 11 walks.
In 2015, Domingo was assigned to the Staten Island Yankees and went on to pitch in 48 innings, posting a 3-0 record with a 1.69 ERA in 11 games. He then was given the opportunity to pitch for the Surprise in the Arizona Fall League where he would be able to face hitters of higher caliber. While pitching out of the bullpen, he earned a 1-0 record with a 2.25 ERA in 12 appearances while striking out 11.
“He does a pretty dang good job repeating his delivery. It’s the same every time. That’s what allows him to throw strikes. He’s got a good feel. This kid has a great arm, but he has a good feel for the strike zone.”-Jose Rosado (CGL Pitching Coach)
There’s a ton to love about Acevedo. He’s a high standing pitcher with a powerful fastball that has peeked at 103 MPH during 2015, and scouts have rated his change up as a “huge plus” and his developing slider has made “tremendous progress.”
Acevedo may be a bullpen pitcher in the long run, but for now the Yankees believe he will be a starter in the future. According to scouts, he works better on a schedule and has worked at repeating his delivery as the season progressed. He is constantly compared to Michael Pineda because they share the similar delivery style.
In 2016, he will likely head the Charleston River Dogs pitching staff as the Yankees hope to develop him as the next Luis Severino in the farm system. Keep a close eye on this young man as the years pass by.
