The Yankees are the perfect example of a team burdened by big contracts, high-age players whose productivity has begun to drop significantly. They have only won two World Series this decade, and are coming off a disappointing 87 win, Wild Card game loss and need a solution fast.

First baseman Mark Teixeira, designated hitter Alex Rodriguez and the left handed pitcher C.C. Sabathia combine for $70.5 million of salary, more than 32 percent of the team’s total payroll. And while they certainly don’t live up to their contracts, Teixeira and Rodriguez produced far more than anyone predicted they would.

The veterans helped New York rank second in the American League in runs scored, and were assisted by the rookie Greg Bird, who slugged 11 homers when Teixeira went down.  Sabathia struggled all year as he went 6-10 with a 4.73 ERA, but the rotation was helped by rookie right-hander Luis Severino. The former No. 1 prospect went 5-3 with a 2.89 ERA as he and Bird were a prime example of the youth movement in the Bronx.

The farm system of the New York Yankees organization has more depth than any Yankee team over the last decade, and in 2016, many of these prospects can emerge as rookie sensations.

Gear up Yankee fans. This is the new generation of home grown talent! Here are the top players who you’ll be cheering for in the near future.
