The New York Giants filled their head coaching vacancy by promoting Ben McAdoo, and are beginning to round out the remainder of their coaching staff as well.

The New York Giants finished their search for a new head coach earlier in the week, making a predictable decision and promoting offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo to the head coaching spot. McAdoo was brought on board two years ago and has overseen a top-10 offense both seasons as the offensive coordinator and has Eli Manning playing some of the best football of his career.

With him being promoted, the Giants are now beginning to fill in the remainder of the staff. The first question people have is who will replace McAdoo as the offensive coordinator? That will also be filled in house, as quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan is expected to be promoted to fill the role.

That is what Fox Sports 1 aNFL Insider Mike Garafolo has reported as the Giants plans at offensive coordinator. He also reports that former Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin will also be joining the staff. Philbin was originally rumored to be in line for the offensive coordinator job, but that is the title that Sullivan will hold. The new speculation is that Philbin could be given the assistant head coach title.

This is Sullivan’s second go round with the Giants, as he was the quarterback coach with the team in 2010 and 2011. He left the team to be the offensive coordinator with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under Greg Schiano in 2012 and 2013, but when he was fired Sullivan was also let go. He returned to the Giants in 2015 as the quarterbacks coach once again, and will now be promoted to offensive coordinator.

Philbin was fired by the Dolphins in October and rightfully so. Despite being known as a players coach, Philbin was not getting the results on the field to save his job and was shown the door. The team looked to have quit on him a bit, as the Dolphins got crushed in his last two games as head coach by divisional foes Buffalo Bills and New York Jets by a combined score of 68-28. The Jets game was the played in London and was the last straw, as Philbin was fired shortly after the Dolphins returned home for their bye week.

Despite his struggles in Miami, Philbin is a good fit alongside McAdoo. As a first time head coach it is always nice to have people around you with experience, and he will bring that. Philbin will also bring a familiarity with what McAdoo will be trying to do offensively; the two worked together with the Green Bay Packers from 2006-2011 when Philbin was the offensive line coach and offensive coordinator and McAdoo was the tight ends coach.

The only question remaining is who will be calling the plays? According to Jordan Ranaan of NJ.com, that duty will still fall upon McAdoo. That is something that will please Eli Manning, as he was a supporter of McAdoo getting the head coaching job along with Odell Beckham Jr.

The Giants may have had a poor stretch of games, but it is definitely a positive that there will be some continuity offensively as the schemes will stay the same; hopefully the win loss results will improve though in 2016.
